A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
